Educational estimate under current law, not an SSA determination. The tool does not collect or transmit the values entered. SSA uses your earnings record, eligibility rules, exact claiming month and statutory rounding.

Why the calculator needs two inputs

Your birth year determines your full retirement age and the percentage adjustment for claiming early or delaying. It does not reveal your earnings history, so it cannot determine a reliable dollar amount by itself.

For the dollar input, sign in to your official my Social Security account and use the estimated monthly benefit at full retirement age. Do not send COLA Insight a Social Security number, benefit notice, earnings record or login information.

How the estimate is calculated

  • For months claimed before full retirement age, the estimate applies SSA's monthly early-retirement reduction factors.
  • For months after full retirement age, it applies delayed retirement credits through age 70.
  • The optional COLA switch applies the official 3.6% 2027 adjustment to the age-adjusted estimate.
  • The optional Medicare switch subtracts the displayed standard Part B premium as an educational scenario.

SSA calculations use the exact entitlement month, underlying earnings record and statutory rounding. Compare this result with your official estimate before making a claiming decision.

Frequently asked questions

Can my birth year alone determine my Social Security benefit?

No. Birth year determines full retirement age and helps calculate early or delayed claiming adjustments. The dollar benefit also depends on your covered earnings record, so this calculator asks for the full-retirement-age estimate shown in your my Social Security account.

Why is age 62 lower than full retirement age?

Retirement benefits claimed before full retirement age are permanently reduced by a monthly formula. For people whose full retirement age is 67, claiming at 62 generally produces a 30% reduction before other adjustments.

Why compare age 70?

Delayed retirement credits can increase a retired-worker benefit for months after full retirement age through age 70. Delaying beyond age 70 does not add more delayed retirement credits.
